how to control kidney stones

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Most kidney stones less than 6mm in size that is 70-80% of stones can be treated conservatively. If pain, nausea and vomiting, infection can be controlled, most of these stones will pass spontaneously. Patients need to be able to stay well hydrated while trying to pass a kidney stone. An attempt to control pain is with narcotic and anti-inflammatory medication. Use of the anti-inflammatory may decrease the amount of narcotic needed to control the pain,Drinking large volumes of water each day will dilute the mineral or stone-forming salts in the urine. Many experts advise people who are prone to kidney stones to drink 12 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. Stones cannot form in urine that is diluted. Some researches have indicated that intake of vitamin B6 in excess quantities by women, tends to cause kidney stones. Women require only 2 mg of vitamin B6 every day and this quantity must not exceed unless prescribed by a physician. Diet rich in sodium and high oxalate content foods such as chocolates, tea, green leafy vegetables will raise the risk of kidney stone formation in women as well as men. Such type of foodstuff should be taken in appropriate quantities to maintain the oxalate levels in the body.Even with careful regulation of water intake and diet, stones still may form. But there are some medications that can help prevent this.
These medications can reduce the level of stone-forming chemicals such as uric acid, calcium, oxalate, or cystine in the blood. They also can inhibit an enzyme required by the bacteria that cause struvite stones to form. Other medications can be used for relief of pain from kidney stones.

How to control anger

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Many of us at times have been upset. Being upset is a part of life. Not all things will go the way you want them to go. When this upset turns to anger we must be careful how we handle ourselves. Here are some steps to control your anger and have it vent in proper ways.Mental therapy alone may be extremely helpful for anger release, but it can only take you so far. Similarly, the physical act of doing exercise can help many people let off steam, but it may not remove deep-seated anger.. Do something that is physically exerting. Instead of punching a wall or a person, go run around the house, or mow the yard. Go for a walk, swim, bikeride, or shoot some hoops. This can provide a physical outlet for your emotions.Find something that is calming. Try deep breathing from your diaphragm. Take 10 deep calming breaths. This can be very soothing for most people. Combine this with step 1 and count to 10 slowly while breathing.Do not expect others to share the same standards, values, and expectations as oneself. Maybe the most common expectation is expecting others to conform to one’s own standards. Don’t assume others who make one angry are doing it intentionally. They may simply have different standards. It is also important to suggest that if you feel the need to express yourself in any of these ways, that you either are totally alone so that you don’t feel inhibited, or that you are in the surroundings of a group of people who are supportive of this type of activity. If you don’t have a private room in your house, maybe you can find a secluded area, where no one will hear or see you — even the inside of your car may work.

malaria prevention and control

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may develop severe complications and die. Each year 350-500 million cases of malaria occur worldwide, and over one million people die, most of them young children in sub-Saharan Africa.Malaria symptoms include chills, flu-like symptoms, fever, vomiting, diarrhea and jaundice. The disease can be life-threatening. However, you can treat malaria with medicines. The type of medicine depends on which kind of malaria you have and where you were infected.Malaria is mainly caused by parasitic protozoa, which spends most of its life in the red blood cells of humans. Malaria is spread by the female Anopheles mosquito, which transmit the parasites by first ingesting them from an infected person’s blood and then injecting the parasite in to an healthy person.Usually there is no risk of catching malaria in the UK, but if are living in a country with tropical and subtropical areas, then malaria is very common in those areas and any body could catch it.Two types of drugs are used to treat malaria. Blood schizonticides, which attack parasites in red blood cells, are used in acute infection to prevent or terminate the clinical attack. Tissue schizonticides are medications that act on the exoerythrocytic parasite stages (forming merozoites and hypnozoites) in liver cells to prevent relapse. Treatment with tissue schizonticides, known as “radical” cure, is required for infections of P. vivax and P. ovale. The herb chirayata, botanically known as Swertia chirata, is also beneficial in the treatment of intermittent type of malarial fevers. It helps in lowering the temperature. An infusion of the herb, prepared by immersing 15 gm of chirayata in 250 ml of hot water with aromatics like cloves and cinnamon, should be given in doses of 15 to 30 ml.Alum is also useful in malaria – First take a small amount of alum and then roast it over a hot plate. Now powder it. Half a teaspoon of this powder 0should be taken about four hours before the expected attack and half a teaspoon every two hours after it. This may help you in giving relief.

Brain Tumors Prevention Tips

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

A brain tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue in which the cells grow and multiply without restraint, apparently unregulated by the mechanisms that control normal cells. One factor that distinguishes brain tumors from other tumors is that they arise in the skull, an organ encased by bone, and there is very little room for expansion with the skull. They are also among the few types of tumors that generally do not tend to metastasize or spread to other parts of the body. There are many unproven causes and risk factors that are being studies. Cell phone use and the consumption of aspartame are two very controversial topics that some believe may cause brain cancer. there are some tips of prevention.Know that those who have a family history of cancer, those with auto-immune diseases and those who have been exposed to radiation may be at increased risk of brain tumors.Know that patients who have had melanoma, lung, breast, colon or kidney cancer are at risk for metastasized, or secondary, brain cancer.Surgery is the chief form of treatment for brain tumors that lie within the membranes covering the brain or in parts of the brain that can be removed without damaging critical neurological functions.Steroids and anti-convulsants (to stop seizures) are the most common medications used for brain tumor patients. Steroids are given to reduce inflammation of tissues and control swelling of the brain, particularly before and after surgery.Chemotherapy works to destroy tumor cells with drugs that may be given either alone or in combination with other treatments. The prognosis for patients with a brain tumor is as individual as the patients themselves. Your doctors will help you understand the possible consequences of your specific tumor.
